Meeting today on tourism plans for Fort Monroe

HAMPTON (AP) -- The federal agency overseeing Fort Monroe's transfer to the state of Virginia is seeking guidance on what visitors would like to experience when they visit.

The Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority plans to start working on devising an interpretive master plan and a business plan for the 570-acre historic waterfront post, which the Army plans to leave in 2011.

A town-hall meeting to discuss Fort Monroe is scheduled for Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hampton's Crowne Plaza Marina Hotel. The public can vote on which types of visitor experiences they consider important.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says Fort Monroe is well suited to become a national park, noting the variery of habitat types and that it offers excellent opportunities for wildlife-based recreation and conservation.
