After the attack at Fort Hood, the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center was on high alert Friday. Officials did checks on all vehicles entering the property.
Every other military base told 13News they made no security changes in light of the events.
Former Commanding Officer at Naval Station Norfolk Joe Bouchard says military bases are some of the safest places in the country. After 9/11, Bouchard helped do a security overhaul at Naval Station Norfolk. He says the measures currently in place would not have stopped an attack like the one at Fort Hood.
“A lot of the security is oriented toward external threats, not toward an individual who is a member of the service,” Bouchard said.
Suspected shooter Major Nidal Malik Hasan was an active duty military psychiatrist.
