NEWPORT NEWS -- Hampton Roads Academy will close Friday because so many students are out sick with the flu.

According to a note on the school's Website, the flu is hitting students in the lower and middle divisions particularly hard. The upper school has had minimal absences.

Officials say the spread is the result of person-to-person contact and that staff has been diligent in applying disinfectant and bio-shield.

Classes are due to resume as usual on Monday.
