NORFOLK -- The federal government isn't saying when construction could begin on an addition to the U.S. District Courthouse in Norfolk, weeks after moving forward with plans to take land for it by eminent domain.

Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim says it could be years before the abandoned construction site on Granby Street teems with activity again.

"From what I understand, what I heard years ago, the government has money to purchase the site, perhaps, but after that there are no funds allocated for this annex," Fraim said.

The U.S. General Services Administration would not answer our questions.

"The U.S. General Services Administration is currently not in a position to discuss procurement sensitive information," spokeswoman Gina Blyther Gilliam stated.

The site was supposed to be Granby Tower -- Norfolk's tallest building -- until the developer lost crediting in the housing crisis.
